When your Elton John and it's your birthday, you just have to celebrate. And then, when it is one of life's milestones, like turning sixty, well then you just have to put the petal to the metal.
Celebrating the big six oh, John delivered a lengthy concert for his fans at Madison Square Garden, complete with various dedications, recollections and a banner bearing the number 60 under Mr. John's name. In actuality, the banner offered one other milestone for the famous singer. The performance was his 60th at the famous arena, giving him top billing all time for Madison Square Garden Concert appearances.
The talented singer began with a song from one of his first albums, conveniently titled "Sixty Years On." The song was delivered with Las Vegas-style lighting that befitted the festive occasion.
During the course of the evening the likes of Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg took the stage and toasted John. Said the two comedians, John was "a man who used to make Liberace look Amish."
Long time partner, lyricist Bernie Taupin also joined the birthday boy on stage. The non-singing Taupin promptly led everyone in a chorus of Happy Birthday.
Rightfully so, Elton indicated that without his lyric-writing sidekick, there would have been no career for the pianist. Said John, "Without Bernie Taupin none of us would be here tonight. Because the words have always come first."
"I'm Still Standing," proved to be a definitive crowd favorite. The singer delivered that staple amidst a video montage of album covers and photographs
