Private yachts just aren’t enough for cruising in luxury anymore. A new way for the ultra-rich to get a taste of the world at sea is with a private submarine; ideally one equipped with a gym, jacuzzi and wine cellar.
Want to watch sharks and whales in their natural habitat or explore a shipwreck without the hassle of SCUBA gear? Whether you’re looking for all kinds of exciting new experiences, or you’re a true marine biology lover, private submarines are available for the super-rich.
What’s Out There?
On the lower end for $1 million, luxury submersibles manufacturer U.S. Submarines offers a two-seater Explorer 1000, small enough to fit on a large yacht. A mid-priced Seattle 1000, for $25 million, has five staterooms on two decks, which could convince even the most loyal private jet owner to spend some money underwater.
But for those willing to plunk down $80 million and wait the three and a half years it takes to build, there’s U.S. Submarine’s Phoenix 1000, with 5,000 square feet on four levels. An owner can build a virtual underwater home with up to ten bedrooms, a gym and a jacuzzi – more than what a private jet and FAA regulations would allow.
There’s a fair share of $100 million yachts that can stack up to submarine luxury though – Helium Report’s directory of yacht clubs is a good place to start looking. These yacht clubs specialize in fractional ownership, which makes economical sense for high-dollar luxury items.
