A yacht has been found anchored off the Cornish coast with the engine running but no one on board.
It is looking increasingly likely that whoever was on the vessel may have gone overboard during the anchoring operation, off Mullion on the Lizard peninsula, a Falmouth coastguard spokesman said yesterday.
"That is the worst-case scenario," said the spokesman, adding that there was "quite a big swell running" together with a south-easterly wind of up to six knots.
Concerns were first raised because the yacht was anchored around 200 yards off Mullion, and it was feared she could drag her anchor.
Efforts were made to attract the attention of anyone on board and flares were set off, but there was no response.
The Penlee lifeboat was sent to the scene and found no one aboard.
Coastguard shore teams from Mullion and nearby Porthleven have been searching the shoreline and a Royal Navy rescue helicopter was also at the scene.
