Who would remember King Tut if he didn't have a tomb? While monuments for the dead are nothing new for kings and queens, lavish, ornate mausoleums are making a comeback among well-off baby boomers.
"With the rise of baby boomers, funeral service consumers are making funeral and cemetery decisions based on the values they perceive as quality and authentic values," says Ray Lope, co-owner of William Sullivan & Son Funeral Home of Utica and Royal Oak.
Cool comfort: In Clinton Township, Resurrection Cemetery's Most Holy Trinity Mausoleum, completed in 2006, offers crypts that accommodate 5,000 featuring climate-controlled, above-ground final resting places with skylights, marble walls, artwork and glass vaulted ceilings. (It is 20% sold.)
There, you can reserve a single crypt inside the public mausoleum for $8,500 to $22,000, or secure a more private space for a family of six for an estimated $700,000. You also might think about building a private tomb for the whole family on the cemetery's premises. Prices start at $500,000.
Art and elegance: Two coveted mausoleum crypts are available for purchase inside Resurrection's chapel bejeweled with a bronze replica of Michelangelo's Pieta statue. It is one of a handful of exact Vatican replicas in the world. With this option, you and your spouse could literally take your money to the grave to the tune of $2 million for two.
