According to US reports, the pop princess bought the four-storey penthouse pad for more than three million dollars (£1,624 million) in 2002 but put it on the market for just under six million dollars (£3.248 million) in 2004.

Two years and a significant price reduction later, the 4,400 sq-ft abode has finally been snapped up by an unidentified buyer, no doubt enamoured by the spacious property's three bedrooms, four bathrooms and rooftop terrace.

The luxurious New York apartment was once owned by Rolling Stone Keith Richards.

The 24-year-old, who is married to wannabe rapper Kevin Federline, reportedly splashed out on a house in Maui, her favourite Hawaiian island, earlier this year.

The Toxic singer, who has a baby son, Sean Preston, and who is pregnant with her second child, apparently fell in love with the waterfront love nest while she was on holiday on the picturesque island.

A source was quoted in the Sun newspaper as saying: "Britney is really hoping this new home will be a family place."
